India’s ancient Vedic wisdom has a nice quote about how
different animals lose their lives due to attachment to only one sense
object – “The deer, the elephant, the moth, the fish and the honey
bee---these five are annihilated because of their slavery to one or the
other senses such as sound, taste, vision, scent--through their own
attachment. (Vivekachudamani - 76)
What then is
the condition of the human who is attached to all of these senses?”
Then what can be said about us humans who have all these senses
functioning unchecked. The Gita warns us that - As a strong wind sweeps
away a boat on the water, even one of the roaming senses on which the
mind focuses can carry away a man's intelligence.
