Thinking ......

Aishu mummy in deep thinking. Why I came here sangareddy from Sydney? What is this marriage stuff? What these people doing here? Do they need to spend this much time, energy n money to have fun? Arya n I have fun in our garden only. If its not fun n if its about gathering, yeah we do gather with Deepu, Siri, Lucky,Srini,Adya n with all our friends at our home. But v don't have these big preparations. If it's not about above stuff n if it's about Tradition/Culture(Sampradayam/Samskruthi) Santhu mama quotes from scriptures,

Harer nama harer nama
Harer nama eva kevalam
Kalau nasteva nasteva
Nasteva gatir anyathi

It means " Hari Nam/ Hari katha / Hari Seva" is the only tradition/service/culture of mankind.

But no one says Harinam here. Every one is gossiping.

So what is these big marriage preparations about?
Can anyone explain it to me?

Ok fine. If you say we cant explain but its all about relationships n etc. That's fine but while doing these preparations what's your problem if you listen to Harinama. Papam santhu mama is playing Hare Krishna Maha Mantra on Mantra box, why are you stopping that as soon as he leaves the room. I love Harinama. I think not only me everyone loves Harinama. Why don't we do the things which are helpful to us in long run, we know from scriptures

Trinadapi sunichena
Tarorapi sahisnuna
Amanina manadena
Kirtaniya sadahari

We can chant Kannayya's nama/bhajana/poems/rhymes anytime, anywhere n anyhow. There is no restrictions at all. So why dont we follow " Kirtaniya Sadahari"?

And we know that "Hrisikena Hrisikesa Sevanam" - why don't we engage all our senses in serving the master of senses?

I got it now. I think that's why Sri Chaitanya Maha prabhu said following in his Sikshastakam

namnam akari bahudha nija-sarva-shaktis
tatrarpita niyamitah smarane na kalah
etadrishi tava kripa bhagavan mamapi
durdaivam idrisham ihajani nanuragaha

O my Lord, Your holy name alone can render all benediction to living beings, and thus You have hundreds and millions of names like Krishna and Govinda. In these transcendental names You have invested all Your transcendental energies. There are not even hard and fast rules for chanting these names. O my Lord, out of kindness You enable us to easily approach You by Your holy names, but I am so unfortunate that I have no attraction for them.

Seriously how unfortunate we are- we have interest for movies/games/politics/food .... the list goes on. If not always atleas some part of the day can we chant Harinama? Yes we can.

Yay santhu mama started doing pooja. I will join him. We will sing n dance and offer water, flowers n dhoop stick to Sri Sri RadhaGopivallabha and Tulasi mata.

You all who ever is reading this can u please spend at least 10 mins of your time in chanting MahaMantra.

You may say I dont know MahaMantra. I know here it is for your benefit

Hare Krishna Hare Krishna
Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama
Rama Rama Hare Hare.

Okay
Have a happy Krishna Conscious day.

Haribol.

Arya anna wait I am coming.

*25 Life Lessons from Ramayana*

*Power of Bad Association*: It was a known fact in Ayodhya that Kaikeyi loved Lord Rama more than his own son Bharath, then how could she become so evil. It is by her bad association with Mantara.

*Attachment to service & not to the position*: Lord Ram was willing to become the king as a service to Maharaj Dasarath and He was also willing to go to the forest as a service to His father.

*Mission of Life should be to vanquish the demoniac tendencies in our heart:* Lord Ram’s purpose to kill the demons was fulfilled by His banishment to the forest.

*Even extreme reversals if taken in the proper spirit will help us fulfill our mission in life:* For example, Law of gravity is only in effect in the Earth’s sphere and not beyond. So also Laws of material nature act only in material consciousness not in spiritual consciousness.

*Ram or Aaram, A test for every seeker*: Citizens of Ayodhya wanted to go with Lord Ram to forest and leave behind all the comforts (Aaram) of the City Ayodhya.

*Alertness in Spiritual Life*: Lord Ram leaves Ayodhyavasis when they were asleep. If one is inattentive or lazy, one will loose taste in Bhakti.

*(Sometimes) Saintly persons might cause pain to others not to hurt them but benefit them:* Bharat disowns Kaikeyi, or Prahlad disregards Hiranyakashipu, a Doctor may cause pain (operation) to patient to cure him.Goal is to please the Lord: For Bharat, he wanted to stay in the forest which was easier than to return and rule the Kingdom but he did it to please Lord Ram.

*Lord is the Proprietor*: Bhoktaram Yajna tapasam (Bhagavad Gita 5.29). Bharat was ruling the kingdom on Lord Ram’s behalf by keeping the Paduka’s on the Throne. We are only caretakers, He is the real proprietor, He can give and take away. The Caretaker acts according to the will of the owner.

*Anybody can make a show of greatness*: The reversals test us who we are. When Lakshmana cuts Surpanaka’s nose, gone was the charming form, gone was the facade and then the real ugly form manifested. One’s greatness is tested by one’s ability to tolerate provoking situations.

*Bhakti (Sita) cannot be achieved by Deception:* Ravana wanted to kidnap Sitadevi by deception, but he gets Maya-Sita at the end. Greed and lust are never satiated, they lead to arrogance and envy.Attachments can creates traps and make us suffer: Marichi takes up a golden dear form to which Sitadevi developed deep attachment to have it and thus trapped Sitadevi. We should see the substance through the eyes of the scripture. Marichi was all about false promises. For example, spider web is most attractive to the fly but actually it’s a trap.

*Maya knows our weaknesses:* She can make our strength into weaknesses and take us away from the circle of instructions of great souls. Ravana uses Sitadevi’s jnana attitude to serve great souls to disobey Lakshmana.

*Always stand by the Right*: Jatayu’s integrity. Real success is to please the Lord. Jatayu lost his life fighting for Lord Ram but achieved the purpose of Life to please the Lord. It is better to lose & win than to win & lose.

*Patience, Determination & Enthusiasm*: Example of Shabari. Long time ago, Guru had asked her to wait for Lord Ram while all other disciples and Guru himself went back to Godhead. She showed her enthusiasm by working hard everyday to clean the place, plucking flowers & fruits for the Lord. She had complete faith in the words of Guru and patiently waited with determination.

*The Lord reveals only when He wants.Honesty, We can’t put a facade before the Lord:* Hanumanji disguises when he went to meet Lord Ram. Lord knows within who we are, we have to be honest to receive the mercy of the Lord. Lord Ram didn’t speak to Hanuman for four months.

*Obstacles on the path of Bhakti*: The demons who came to stop Hanuman during his jumping across the ocean. Mainaka (Gold Mountain) – temptation to seek comfort before achieving our real purpose. Simhika (Shadow catching demoness) – While striving for Bhakti, people will chastise, criticize and misunderstand us, we should have the willingness to tolerate. Surasa (Serpent): Being envious of people in higher position and try to stop their progress. This is jealousy of the mind. By devotional service, we have to devour Simhika who represents Envy.

*Arrogance cannot understand wellwishers:* The world is a mirror of our own consciousness. Ravana was thinking Mandodari was envious of Sita, but actually he was envious of Lord Ram. Ravana was thinking Vibhisana was disloyal and taking the side of Lord Ram, but he was disloyal to Kubera, his cousin brother. When we think we know, we are not willing to listen to good counsel. Spiritual progress means simplicity and humility. If they are lacking, we won’t listen thinking that we know better, that was Ravana.

*Big or Small, we can swim the ocean of Samsara by chanting Lord Ram’s holy name*: Big or Small, all the stones floated by writing Lord Ram’s name.Pride or Attachment leads to loss of intelligence: dhyayato visayan pumsah (Bhagavad Gita 2.62). Every stage of this sloka was exhibited by Ravana. Loss of intelligence – Even when all his stalwart warriors including Kumbakarna, Indrajit died but he still didn’t give up.

*Hearing about the Lord – Revival of dormant love:* Lord Ram being Paramatma in the heart of everyone including Ravana could have killed him just by turning off Ravana’s heart. But the Lord and His pleasure potency Sitadevi went through this whole ordeal so that we can hear about the Lord and revive our dormant love.

*Righteousness*: Vibhishana comes to take shelter of Lord Ram, all the monkeys were against, except Hanumanji. Vibhishana was willing to be misunderstood or even chastised to surrender to the Lord.

*Counsel and Advise in battle against Illusion*: In battle against Illusion, at every stage association of devotees to put us straight without which we will fall. Lord Ram doesn’t need but takes the counsel of Vibhishana.

*Grace of a Sadhu needed to kill demons within:* Agastya muni had given a divine arrow to Lord Ram. That arrow was used by Lord Ram to kill Ravan by piercing his heart.

*Welcoming the Lord in hearts with lamps*: That is Dipavali festival. Lord Ram is welcomed back into Ayodhya with lamps. Dipavali is not just physical fire but lighting the hearts with light of Lord’s grace and process of devotional service. When heart is fully illuminated, then we can experience Lord Ram within ourself. When our love awakens, in that love, compassion for all living beings awakens. Then Ramrajya is awakened within the heart and then without (i.e. out in the world). Jai Shree Ram!!

Maryada Purshottama Lord Ramachandra: The symbol of perfection.

RAMAYANA REVELATION DAY 10
Maryada Purshottama Lord Ramachandra: The symbol of perfection.
# A famous mantra of Lord Rama which explains how different living entities related to Him and how the Lord revealed Himself according to the relation. It was composed by Vaishta Muni and discussed between Mother Parvati and Lord Shiva in the Padma purana (Uma Maheswara Samvada 254-61). Mother Parvathi Devi keeps chanting this mantra always even in her sleep and this makes her very dear to Lord Shiva, who is the topmost Vaishnava.
raamaaya raama bhadraaya raamachandraaya vedase
raghunaathaaya naathaaya seethaaya pathaye namah

# Raamaaya:- For Dasaratha, He is dear "Raama". Although He was named Ramachandra, Dasaratha had the privilege of calling him affectionately as "Raama". It shows the closeness in relationship between father and son.
# Raamabhadraaya:- For spiritual seekers, Lord Rama is the bestower of the desired benedictions according to their desire. And for his pure devotees, He gives the most auspicious benediction which is entry into spiritual world. So the scriptures advise all spiritual seekers to worship Lord Rama and since He blesses them with auspiciousness according to their approach for them, He is Ramabhadra ('Bhadra' means auspiciousness).
# Raama Chandraaya:- For mother Kausalya, Kaikeyi and other women, He was Ramachandra because His beauty was pleasing like moon. The Ramayana states 'chandra kanthaananam raamam atiiva priya darshanam' - Lord Rama's face is like that of the moon and very pleasing to those who see Him.
#Vedhase:- For great sages like Jamadagni, Vasishta, Viswamitra etc., the Lord revelaed Himself as the Supreme Absolute truth, Ultimate Reality (para tattva). More than being the son of Dasarata and Kousalya’ they realized Him as the creator of everything. Therefore they address Him as 'vedhase', - the omniscient creator.
# Raghunaathaya:- According to the subjects of Ayodhya, Rama is an excellent king. So they saw Him as the best of Kings of Raghu vamsa (Raghunatha).
# Naathaaya:- 'naatha' means husband or master. Mother Sita saw Him as her beloved husband and eternal consort. And devotees like Hanumanji, Sugreeva, Vibheeshana, Jambavan, Guha etc., saw Him as their eternal master and Lord.
# Sitaayah pathaye:- For the subjects of Mithila He was consort of their princess Sita.
Although the Lord is versatile each one conceives one aspect according to their relation with Him. Thus the Lord possesses multi-faceted personality. The important thing is to re-establish our relation with Him and this is possible by pure devotional service, without hidden material agendas.
MORAL: "Lord Rama conquered the worlds by Truth, the poor people by His charitable nature, the teachers and sages by His service attitude, devotees by his wonderful pastimes, and the enemies by His mighty bow." - (Ayodhya Khanda 12.29)

LAXMAN: The pinnacle of loyalty

RAMAYANA REVELATION DAY 9
LAXMAN: The pinnacle of loyalty
Laxman: He was not an ordinary human being, In fact he was a manifestation of Sheshnaga. He was the only person who could kill Indrajit, Ravana’s powerful son who had even defeated Rama. His devotion and love for his brother Rama was legendary
The King Dasharatha,
Was blessed with four sons.
Who were spotless in their character
And was favourite of everyone's
Although the four
Championed their own charm.
Yet all of them
Were greatly devoted to Lord Ram!
Laxman especially,
addressed himself as His servant.
And by his actions
He proved himself as a fervent.
When Ram was banished
He didn't let him alone,
Rather he accompanied him,
With his body, mind and soul.
He had anger,
but for what is against Ram
Every obstruction therefore
Were dealt with anger an arm.
He went to threaten Sugriv
Carrying a sharp sword
And chastised him and sized him up
When he failed to act his word.
Lord Ram, The Supreme Lord
With love, kept him so close.
And Laxman as a faithful devotee
Serves him wherever he goes.
MORAL:
Laxman's character exemplifies service,
And the ways that we must serve.
And do everything for the pleasure of the Lord
And that's how we show our Love

KEIKEYI: Mother of Bharat Maharaj. An Important Step Mother

RAMAYANA REVELATION DAY 8
KEIKEYI: Mother of Bharat Maharaj. An Important Step Mother
# Keikeyi was a very powerful queen of Maharaj Dasrath.
# In a terrible fight with Sambarasura, an arrow hit a slot on his chariot wheel and chariot began to wobble, Keikeyi, stooped and inserted her finger into the slot to keep the wheel coming off. The entire weight of the chariot rested on the brave queen’s fragile finger. Dasrath’s eyes welled up with tears at the sight of his wife enduring excruciating pain just to save him. Because of this act of Keikeyi, Dasrath could win the war.
# If service is like a flower and genuine service attitude is like fragrance, then gratitude is like a bee that hovers over it.
# Relationships thrive when genuine service is acknowledged by active gratitude. Keikeyi was happy to serve and Dasrath was grateful to receive. She provided assistance and he gave appreciation.
# It is said that Keikeyi was such a pure devotee of Lord Rama that she even agreed to leave her dignity. She agreed to be an instrument in the sequence of events which led to Lord Rama's exile and bring disrespect to her.
# A wonderful example of service where Queen Keikeyi sacrificed her respect and dignity for Lord’s service.
# When Manthra gave the news of Lord Rama's Abhishek to Keikeyi, she was unable to contain her joy, she and rushed toward Manthra , “ O Manthara, thank you! This is the best news I have received in my entire life! Rama is going to become the king of Ayodhya! This is nectar to my ears! Thank you Manthra once again. You have filled my life with immense pleasure." . She had such a pure mind at this time that she saw no difference between Rama and Bharat.
# The tragedy of Kaikeyi lies in the rejection of her awesome sacrifice by the very person for whom she went through fire: her son Bharata.
# But Manthra was able to manipulate her by giving many arguments. We should be very careful of our association, good association can take us on a beautiful path on the other hand bad association is powerful enough to drag us to hell. The poison of distrust had been injected, which changed Keikeyi’s loyalty toward Dasaratha. Dasratha had come to Keikeyi seeking happiness and peace. But Keikeyi could only think about her own happiness as the result of her discussions with Manthra.
# When a crooked mind comes between two people, love becomes hatred and simplicity becomes duplicity. Keikeyi allowed Manthra, whose mind was more crooked then her body, to come between her husband and herself and thus permanently twist their relationship.

MORAL: Crookedness of the body is not as bad as the crookedness of the mind

Lord Hanuman: Flagbearer of true devotion

RAMAYANA REVELATION DAY 7
Lord Hanuman: Flagbearer of true devotion
# Lord Hanuman is the best example to illustrate devotion as a servant (dasyabhakti) towards Lord Rama. He was ever-ready to sacrifice even His life for the sake of His Lord. Hanuman is a combination of a servitor and a soldier.
# Lord Hanuman free of all fear, strictly celibate, extremely intelligent, a skilled poet, thoroughly learned in all Vedic literature, and the one who gave excellent strategic advice during the battle with Ravana.
# Seeing Hanuman's example, we can observe his readiness for service in all situations. Thus, whoever we are, we always have something to offer the Lord and if we serve to our fullest capacity, with all our heart and soul, it will be accepted by the Lord, as first class devotion.
# As Hanuman, made fun of squirrel's tiny effort, Lord Rama rebuked him. The message is that we should strive to do our best for the Lord, and progress in our service, we should never obstruct or belittle another’s devotional service, no matter how small or insignificant it may seem to us.
# Despite rendering so many services to Lord Rama, when the Lord offered him liberation as a reward, Hanuman did not accept it—he did not want anything in return other than more service.
# It is stated in the scriptures that wherever Rama-katha, stories about Rama, are recited, Hanuman comes to listen. He makes every endeavor to increase the bliss of Lord Ramachandra’s devotees, both in ancient times and today. The immortal Hanuman has vowed to remain in this world as long as the holy names of Rama are chanted.
# On the sacred appearance day of Lord Rama, as we hear stories of his pastimes, and chant the Hare Krishna mantra—the essence of which translates as “My dear Lord, kindly engage me in your service”—we can be sure that the great monkey warrior Hanuman is right there with us, listening and increasing our desire to serve his Lord.

MORAL: To use our talents and capacities fully in the service of the Lord.

Vaanar Sena: their intense desire to serve and associate with the Lord

RAMAYANA REVELATION DAY 5
Vaanar Sena: their intense desire to serve and associate with the Lord
# Engagement in service-The monkeys were actually devatas who wanted to assist in the Ramlila and enjoy Lord’s association in His form as Rama.
# The soldiers Lord Ramachandra recruited in the jungle were all monkeys and did not have proper equipment with which to fight the soldiers of Ravana, for Ravana's soldiers were equipped with weapons of modern warfare whereas the monkeys could only throw stones, mountain peaks and trees. It was only Lord Ramachandra and Laksmana who shot some arrows.
 # However the monkeys and bears won the battle because they had the mercy of Lord Rama, Mother Sita, Hanuman and Vibheeshana. In the same way, we may not be qualified to advance in devotional service, but if we follow in the footsteps of great devotees and spiritual master, by their mercy we will be victorious in achieving Krishna prema.
# If a person is condemned by offending a chaste woman (Mother Sita), even an unsophisticated army of monkeys can defeat him.
# For serving Lord Rama or making friendship with Him, one does not need aristocratic birth or beauty or any material qualification. One just needs sincere desire to serve Him. To prove this the Lord engaged even monkeys and squirrels in His service and blessed them with His merciful glance and association.
MORAL: Strength achieved from transcendence exceeds the strength organized by one's own intelligence and power.

Mother Sita: exhibits her inner harmony throughout her ordeal.

RAMAYANA REVELATION DAY 4
Mother Sita: exhibits her inner harmony throughout her ordeal.
# Lord Rama’s wife, queen, and eternal consort is Sita Devi. She is also the ideal devotee. In the face of extreme hardship, Lord Ramachandra’s queen reveals her extraordinary character, founded on her pure devotion to the Lord.
# Sita's inner harmony: one who acts according to God’s desire is peaceful and has harmonious relationships, regardless of circumstances. Sita Devi exhibits her inner harmony throughout her ordeal, whether she’s hearing of her husband’s fourteen-year banishment to the forest or being abducted and imprisoned by Ravana.
# Sita's forgiveness: After Ravana's death, Hanuman comes to Sita in the ashoka grove and, before taking her to Rama, offers to kill the female guards who have tormented her for so many months. She says 'A righteous person does not consider the offenses of others. At all costs that person always observes the vow of not returning evil for evil, for the virtuous consider good conduct their ornament.'
# Sita's Unconditional Love: we find her steadfast and patient as Ravana’s captive; we see her virtue winning even her vicious guards to her side; we see her ferocious anger toward Ravana soothed by her constant meditation on Rama; we discover that her austerities under the ashoka tree make her not hardhearted but compassionate. All these experiences are harmonized by her unadulterated, unconditional love for Sri Ramachandra.
# Sita's Chastity: When Hanuman arrives and offers to carry Sita on his back across the ocean, Sita, ever conscious of proper behavior, says, “I have vowed never to touch the body of any man other than Rama. I am already mortified due to being grasped by the sinful Ravana. I could not voluntarily touch another man. Nor could I allow anyone other than Rama to rescue me, thereby diminishing Rama’s fame. I therefore prefer to wait for my lord, confident that He will soon arrive.” Hanuman assents to Sita’s request, respecting the incomparable chastity for which she is famous
# Sita's tolerance: Over the twelve months of Sita’s captivity, Ravana grows increasingly desperate and irrational in his frustrated lust. But even though an ordinary person in Sita’s unkempt condition would be weak and miserable, she grows stronger and more thoughtful. The flexibility with which she adjusted to changing situations in the forest has given way to an inflexible resistance to the terror of Ravana and his guards. Sita's resistance to Ravana’s obsession drains him of the powers he won through asceticism. “Thus the soldiers of Lord Ramachandra killed Ravana’s soldiers, who had lost all good fortune because Ravana had been condemned by the anger of mother Sita.”
MORAL: Mother Sita is an ideal example of all good qualities in a woman. Such a woman can play the role of being an ideal daughter, ideal wife and an ideal mother. Mother Sita is regarded as the epitome of womanhood and these women make the ideal society. She is the silent pillar of strength in Ramayana.

Mother Sumitra: Her Selfless Superior Sacrifice

RAMAYANA REVELATION DAY 3
Mother Sumitra: Her Selfless Superior Sacrifice
# In Ramayana, two persons have specially been glorified as Guru, one being Hanuman ji and the other is Mother Sumitra. This is particularly pointed out when Laxman ji comes to Mother Sumitra to inform and take permission for accompanying Sri Rama to the forest.
# Unexpectedly, Mother Sumitra addresses Laxman ji supportively. She emphasizes that Sri Laxman has been begotten as a child so that he can serve His elder brother, The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Shri Rama, especially, during the trial and tribulations of Vanvasa.
# Laxman ji was dumbfounded to hear this and could not respond back because of the her mother's extra ordinary love of Lord Rama, her spirit, enthusiasm, selflessness and sacrifice.
# Sumitra reveals her extraordinary qualities of showing remarkable magnanimity, forbearance, detachment, and to render the wise counsel to Laxmana at the right time
# Mother Sumitra is a Guru for all of us in the true sense of the word. By her personal example she offered the most cherished object of her affection i.e. her son in service of Supreme Personality of Godhead.

MORAL: Mother Sumitra, emphasized the purpose of human birth i.e. to be in constant service of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, no matter whether it means serving in palace or forest.

Maharaj Bharat: An epitome of true love and surrender.

RAMAYANA REVELATION DAY 2
Maharaj Bharat: An epitome of true love and surrender.
# Lord Rama is Maryada Purushottam and Bharat Maharaj on the other hand an ocean of love. Bharat Maharaj was no less in character and integrity. On failing to convince Rama to return to Ayodhya, Bharat Maharaj realized and epitomized the bhava of love.
# Bharat ji's prayers: “I do not want wealth, nor righteousness, nor the fulfillment of my desires. I do not even want liberation. The only boon I ask is that in life and after life I have pure love for the lotus feet of Shri Rama.” In his devotion to the Lord he wanted nothing, not even liberation. He did not care whether Shri Rama loved him or not. As long as he loved Shri Rama, his life’s purpose was fulfilled.
# If we love someone what matters more is what makes that person happy. Adhering to this he illuminated the service bhava i.e. his ultimate goal was to please the Lord. He simply wanted to serve on behalf of his brother Rama and accepted an austere life to match his brother’s. Thus he served as a representative of Lord Rama, by keeping the Paduka’s on the throne.
**MORAL: Unconditional loving service to the Lord, is the very purpose of our life.

Jatayu – Devotion enables you to go beyond your capacity & develop fearlessness

RAMAYANA REVELATION DAY 1
Jatayu – Devotion enables you to go beyond your capacity & develop fearlessness
# When Demon Ravana kidnapped Sita and was taking her to his kingdom, he was challenged by Lord Rama’s great devotee Jatayu. Jatayu, a vulture who was very old at that time and could hardly move, could not tolerate Lord’s wife being kidnapped by a demon.
# Though, he stood no chance against the mighty cruel Ravana, he went much beyond his capabilities and gave a great fight to Ravana and eventually gave his life in the service of the Lord.
# When Lord Rama came and saw Jatayu just about to die, He took him in His lap and told him “On this very day, I am sending you to my eternal abode, Vaikuntha”
# If we deeply think, who was the actual winner in the battle? Was it Ravana, whose whole dynasty was destroyed or was it the great devotee Jatayu, who although lost his life, but got the highest liberation – a place in Lord’s abode.
** Moral: In the unalloyed service of the supreme Lord, there is no defeat irrespective of external circumstances and situations.

Urmila Devi: an unsung hero in Ramayana.

RAMAYANA REVELATION DAY 6
Urmila Devi: an unsung hero in Ramayana.

# When Lord Rama, Sita Devi and Lakshman went to forest for 14 years,  Urmila Devi stayed back in Ayodhya on pursuation by Laxmana, to take care of their parents and family in Ayodhya.
# While Rama, Sita and Laxmana were on vanvaas, Urmila slept for 14 years so that her husband could stay awake and protect his family.
# Serving in separation: Urmila Devi understood the desire of her husband, to serve Lord Rama and Sita Devi during exile by being their guard, protector and servant and assisted her husband in serving the Supreme Lord by not going along with them so that there were no distractions for him in serving Lord Rama. This is a classic example of how serving in separation can be as important and glorious as serving directly
# Service in background: Just like salt in food, no one takes notice of the presence of salt in food but there is almost no food preparations whose good taste is not dependent on right amount of salt in it similarly she encouraged her husband throughout, treading him to the path of righteousness.
# She made a pious offering in the sacrificial fire of her affection for sister Sita, father-like Lord Rama, and beloved husband. She lived the life of a hermit all fourteen years.
# Although her role is quintessentially small in the larger scheme of the events, Maharishi Valmiki categorically states that Urmila's sacrifice was unparalleled.

MORAL: Real service is beyond the framework of fame and designation.

MOTHER'S CURSE

A must read for every parent out there n the lovely children brought into this beautiful world💗
STORY OF A MOTHER'S CURSE !

Here is a good write up by famous editor Udaylal Pai who always supports Indian culture. Just read this -
Recently, I have visited a friend's father in a old age home. There I met a lady, around 74 years old, who reminded me of my mother. I introduced myself. We talked for few minutes.

Then, without any provocation, she started cursing her son and daughter.
"Uday, you have come to see your friend's father. But my children, those %@#%$, never cared for me. They ditched me here like an ugly decayed old dog..."she was cursing and shouting so loud. And the beauty of the words she used would create envy in even among parliamentarians in India. I have never ever heard such gutter adjectives that she used to address her son and daughter - horrible! I could imagine her pain, anger, hatred and alienation. I understood that her son is an engineer and daughter is a medical doctor. They have never come to see her. And she is living on her pension.

"Please don’t curse your children, mother..." I said.

"Both of them are living in huge bungalows with children and servants. They spent lot of money on poojas and rituals too....But they can't spend a minute or a paisa for me “she continued cursing them...

Apparently, she is disillusioned, depressed, frustrated and carrying lot of negative emotions. A tragic situation, indeed. Barring the emotional outburst, we fail to see some basic factors that point to bitter truth in life.

"May I ask you a few questions, mother?"
"Yes..."

"You have given birth to your children with part of your own body. You have nurtured them well. You have provided them with nutritious food and nourished them..."

"Yes...yes...most of the times, I was starving to feed them...Since my husband was not earning well, we were living on my petty salary then..."

"You took care of their body so now they have a good and healthy body..."

"Yes - but my curse will finish off their health, their body will decay..." she scolded.
"Now, my question is, you took care of the body, but what about their mind? What did you do for their mind? Did you teach them any value based knowledge? Did you teach them your traditions, customs, rituals, culture and its significance? Did you read them our puranas and itihas?"

"Who had time for that? I was busy to make both ends meet...I was starving, but I wanted to see them as an engineer or doctor...I wanted to see the society respects my children."

"So, your wishes are fulfilled, then what are you complaining about?"
She looked at me with a blank face.

"You taught your daughter MBBS - she became doctor. You send your son to study BTech and he became engineer. Those are very good positions in your society...You should be happy. You taught them to be competitive and selfish...Fair enough. But how will they learn what you didn't teach them? Did you teach them any values in life? Where will they learn from that they should take care of parents?"

"But...they should...right? I have sacrificed my life...I starved..."

"Mother, you made two mistakes - one, you were irresponsible to your own body and mind. When you starve, trillions of living beings inside your body will starve, have you ever thought about it? It is a self-violence. What about the curse of your own body cells? Second: you were sub-consciously deriving pleasure from this concept: "even if I starve, I fed my kids". So you already got your contentment and happiness. Your wish was to make them professionals and earn respect in the society - it was also fulfilled..."

She didn't have answer.

"Have you sought your kids’ permission before bringing them into this world? Did they request you to take them to this world? If you give them good body, it was your dharma to give them good mind too?"

How Rajmata Jijabai did brought her son Shivaji up? Jijabai told him the tales of Ram, Krishna, Hanuman, Yudhistira, Bheem, Sibi etc - fighting the injustice, being truthful, humane and freeing of people from tyranny. These stories made Shivaji the great. He respected women and his mother.

On the contrary, how did his arch-enemy Aurangzeb was brought up by his mother? She made a demon out of a man. He imprisoned his own father Shah Jahan and assaulted women and auctioned them. He was trading Indian women as slaves.

"But...I was ignorant about such things..." she said. Ignorance of karmic laws is NOT an excuse; each and every karma will have its cause and effects.

Abdul Kalam was brought up by his mother in poverty - he became India's most-respected president. On the contrary, Adolf Hitler was also brought up in poverty by his mother. See the difference!

"Mother, I am sorry to say, but you got what you deserve. You are responsible for your karma and hence the result"

"But the struggle I underwent for them? The miseries and hardship I suffered for bringing them up?"
"Mother, everybody feeds their children. But you should have provided them something else too. Have you shown them or let them experience poverty, miseries and hardship? You wanted to experience it for yourself in the name of love to children... Then how do you expect them to know your troubles? You spent lot of money to make them professionals. Did you spend a single penny to make them a good human being? You have taught them that life is all about tuition or scoring highest marks in the exams and competition items like dance and songs. Did you ever take them to a cancer ward in the hospital? Did you ever take them to an orphanage? Did you make them understand sufferings of old-age people? Where do you expect them to learn such things, mother? From reality shows? Commercials? Television series? If they think that life is about self-centered enjoyment, who is responsible for that life style?"

"But don't they know the meaning of "Mathrudevo bhava" and..." she murmured something

"Mother, mathrudevo bhava means, get yourself elevated to the position of the god, not that your demand your children to respect you as god...” I said.

She didn't utter a single word. Tears rolled out of her eyes. I felt I was exceeding the limit. But somebody should tell it to her. It is for her own good. She should stop producing more negativity and hatred She should take up the responsibility of what had happened to her. That will make her think. And I am sure that she will find solace. There was nothing else I could do in such situation.

"I am really sorry mother...Please forgive me if I have said something that hurt you..."

"No my son, you have opened my eyes...I think I am realising your points..."

"And please stop calling your son, 'son of a bitch' - in fact you are scolding yourself here. Let me assure you, your son and daughter are not going to escape from the results of their bad karma. They will get it back from their children. Then, they may repent. That point of time, they may understand the sacrifice of their parents....So, just pray for them, instead of cursing them..." I said.

This story tells a lot . Parents'  responsibility does not end  by providing all the luxuries and comforts to their children. Generally they think they should provide all those things to their children which they were deprived of in their childhood and thus they dont teach their children to value things.
Offer them only what they need and not what they want. Inculcate moral values from childhood to make them realise the pain, suffering and agony of mankind. As a parent aim towards creating a human being helpful for the society and not creating a being as only your son or daughter.

*A BOAT SWEPT BY WATER*

India’s ancient Vedic wisdom has a nice quote about how different animals lose their lives due to attachment to only one sense object – “The deer, the elephant, the moth, the fish and the honey bee---these five are annihilated because of their slavery to one or the other senses such as sound, taste, vision, scent--through their own attachment. (Vivekachudamani - 76)

What then is the condition of the human who is attached to all of these senses?” Then what can be said about us humans who have all these senses functioning unchecked. The Gita warns us that - As a strong wind sweeps away a boat on the water, even one of the roaming senses on which the mind focuses can carry away a man's intelligence.

10 puranas mention about Maha Prabhu

(1) Srimad-Bhagavatam (11.5.32)

krishna-varnam tvishakrishnamsangopangastra-parshadam
yajnaih sankirtana-prayair yajanti hi sumedhasah

In the age of Kali, intelligent persons perform congregational chanting to worship the incarnation of Godhead who constantly sings the holy name of Krishna. Although His complexion is not blackish, He is Krishna Himself. He is accompanied by His associates, servants, weapons and confidential companions.

krsna-varnam: This word denotes that Lord Chaitanya belongs to the category of Krishna or in other words He is Krishna Himself. krsna-varnam also means one who constantly chants the name of Lord Krishna.

tvisa akrsnam: His bodily complexion is not black. He appeared in golden-like yellow complexion.

sangopangastra-parsadam: Lord Chaitanya is always accompanied by His confidential associates like Lord Nityananda, Advaita Acharya, Sri Gadadhara Pandita, Srivasa Acharya, Haridasa Thakura, etc. In other incarnations, the Lord sometimes made use of His weapons to defeat or kill the demons, but in this age the Lord subdues the demonic mentality with His all-attractive figure of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu who freely distributes Krishna-prema, pure love of Krishna. That is His weapon.

(2) Vishnu-sahasra-nama stotra from Mahabharata

Each of the 1000 names contained in the Vishnu-sahasra-nama stotra that is found in the Mahabharata, glorifies one or more aspects of the Supreme Lord’s transcendental forms, qualities, pastimes etc.

The following names indicate the bodily features of Lord Chaitanya.

suvarna-varno hemango varangas candanangadi

suvarna-varna: He has a golden complexion.
hemanga: He has the appearance of molten gold.
varanga: He is exquisitely beautiful.
candanangadi: The Lord’s body is smeared with sandalwood pulp.

Lord Chaitanya’s qualities and activities are described in the following names.

sannyasa-krc chamah santo nistha-santi-parayanah

sannyasa-krt: He accepts the renounced order of life. (Lord Chaitanya accepted sannyasa at the age of 24.)

sama: He is fully sense-controlled or equipoised.

santa: He is completely peaceful.

nistha: He is rigidly fixed in the chanting of the holy name of Lord Krishna.

santi-parayana: He is the highest abode of devotion and peace. He silences the impersonalist philosophers. (Lord Chaitanya defeated many eminent mayavadis in philosophical debates and converted them to Vaishnavism.)

(3) Garuda Purana

The Supreme Lord says,

aham purno bhavisyami yuga-sandhyau visesatah
mayapure navadvipe bhavisyami saci-sutah

In the first part of Kali-yuga, I will appear in my complete spiritual form in Mayapura, Navadvipa and become the son of Shachi.

Sri Chaitanya was born in Mayapura (a subsection of the holy town of Navadvipa, West Bengal) as the son of Srimati Shachi devi in the year 1486, about 4,500 years after the beginning of the Kali-yuga.

It is also stated in this purana,

kaleh prathama-sandhyayam laksmi-kanto bhavisyati
daru-brahma-samipa-sthah sannyasi gaura-vigrahah

In the first part of Kali-yuga, the Supreme Lord in the golden complexion will become the husband of Lakshmi. Then He will become a sannyasi and reside near Lord Jagannatha.

Sri Chaitanya married His eternal consort Srimati Lakshmipriya and later took sannyasa at the age of 24. After the acceptance of sannyasa, He left Navadvipa and resided in Puri, the holy city of Lord Jagannatha in Orissa. Lord Jagannatha in Puri is also referred to as daru-brahma in the Puranas as the Deities here are made from Neem wood. The word daru means wood in Sanskrit.

yo reme saha-ballavi ramayate vrndavane ‘har-nisam
yah kamsam ni jaghana kaurava-rane yah pandavanam sakha
so ‘yam vainava-danda-mandita-bhujah sannyasa-vesah svayam
nihsandeham upagatah ksiti-tale caitanya-rupah prabhuh

The Supreme Lord who took delight in His pastimes with the gopis, who filled the residents of Vrindavana with joy day and night, who slew Kamsa, and who made friends with the Pandavas in the battle between the Kauravas, will without any doubt, come again to the earth. He will be a sannyasi with the name Chaitanya whose arm will be decorated with a bamboo stick.

It is clear from this verse that Lord Krishna Himself appeared as Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. According to the custom, a sannyasi is supposed to carry a bamboo stick (danda). Lord Chaitanya carried a single bamboo stick as He was an eka-danda sannyasi.

(4) Nrsimha Purana

satye daitya-kuladhi-nasa-samaye
simhordhva-martyakrtis
tretayam dasa-kandharam
paribhavan rameti namakrtih

gopalan paripalayan vraja-pure
bharam haran dvapare
gaurangah priya-kirtanah
kali-yuge caitanya-nama-prabhuh

The Supreme Lord who assumed the form of a half-man, half-lion in the Satya-yuga to cure a dreadful disease that had devastated the Daityas, and who appearing as Rama conquered the ten-headed Ravana in the Treta-yuga, and who removed the burden of the earth in the Dvapara-yuga and protected the cowherd men of Vraja-pura, will be the Lord by name Chaitanya in the Kali-yuga. He will have a golden form and He will take pleasure in chanting the Lord’s holy names.

(5) Padma Purana

The Supreme Lord states:

kaleh prathama-sandhyayam gaurangotham mahi-tale
bhagirathi-tate ramie bhavisyami saci-sutah

I shall take birth as the son of Shachi assuming a golden form in a beautiful place on the bank of the Bhagirathi (Ganges) on the earth in the first part of Kali-yuga.

Mayapura, the birth place of Sri Chaitanya is on the banks of the Ganges. There is a similar verse in the Brahma Purana predicting the appearance of Lord Chaitanya.

(6) Narada Purana

The Supreme Personality of Godhead says,

aham eva kalau vipra nityam pracchanna-vigrahah
bhagavad-bhakta-rupena lokan raksami sarvada

O brahmana, I will deliver all the worlds, concealing myself in the form of a devotee of the Lord in Kali-yuga.

divija bhuvi jayadhvam jayadhvam bhakta-rupinah
kalau sankirtanarambhe bhavisyami saci-sutah

O demigods, please advent on the earth as devotees in Kali-yuga. To inaugurate sankirtana, I will incarnate as the son of Shachi.

(7) Bhavishya Purana
The Supreme Lord states:

anandasru-kala-roma-harsa-purnam tapo-dhana
sarve mama eva draksyanti kalau sannyasa-rupinam

O austere sage, everyone will see My transcendental form as a sannyasi in the age of Kali. I will be displaying symptoms like shedding tears of bliss and hairs standing on end out of ecstasy.

Lord Chaitanya was always merged in the ocean of transcendental ecstasy while chanting the names of Krishna and dancing during sankirtana. He felt intense separation from the Lord and due to those devotional feelings displayed various ecstatic symptoms of pure love for Krishna, such as incessant tears, voice choking up, hairs on the body standing on end etc.

(8) Vayu Purana

The Supreme Lord says,

paurnamasyam phalgunasya phalguni-rksa-yogatah
bhavisye gaura-rupena saci-garbhe purandarat

On the full moon day of the month of Phalguna, conjoined with the star Phalguni, I will appear in a golden form begotten by Purandara in the womb of Shachi.

Lord Chaitanya was born on the full moon day in the month of Phalguna. His father was known by the names Jagannatha Mishra and Purandara Mishra.

svarnadi-tiram asthaya navadvipe janasraye
tatra dvija-kulam prapto bhavisyami janalaye

I will appear in a brahmana family in Navadvipa, by the shore of the Ganges.

bhakti-yoga-pradanaya lokasyanugrahaya ca
sannyasa-rupam asthaya krsna-caitanya-nama-dhrk

In order to engage the people in devotional service and bestow mercy upon them, I will take sannyasa, accepting the name Krishna Chaitanya.

(9) Matsya Purana

The following statement is made by the Lord:

mundo gaurah su-dirghangas tri-srotas-tira-sambhavah
dayaluh kirtana-grahi bhavisyami kalau yuge

In the age of Kali, I will be golden colour. I will be tall and will have a shaven head. The place where I take birth will be a meeting point of three rivers. I will be very merciful and I will keenly engage in chanting the holy names.

Lord Chaitanya, being an eka-danda sannyasi had a completely shaven head as was the custom for such sannyasis. Three rivers – the Ganges, the Yamuna and the Saraswati (which is currently in her hidden form) – flow at Navadvipa.

(10) Skanda Purana

The Supreme Lord states

antah krsnah bahir gaurah sangopangastra-parsadah
saci-garbhe samapnuyam maya-manusa-karma-krt

Inwardly Krishna but outwardly of golden form, I will be accompanied by My associates, servants, weapons, and confidential companions. Taking My birth in the womb of Shachi, I will accept the role of a human being

*Remember Lord Caitanya*

_kathañcana smṛte yasmin_
_duṣkaraṁ sukaraṁ bhavet_
_vismṛte viparītaṁ syāt_
_śrī-caitanyaṁ namāmi tam_

Things that are very difficult to do become easy to execute if one *somehow or other simply remembers Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu.* But if one does not remember Him, even easy things become very difficult. To this Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu I offer my respectful obeisances.

*Holi lilas: 3 stories related to Holi!*

*1 ) Krishna and Radharani*

The Holi of Braj is famous all over India for its intimate connection with the divine deities and their love plays.

It is said that when Krishna was a young boy, he asked the reason for his dark color while Radha was so fair.

His mother Yashoda playfully suggested that he should smear color on Radha’s face too and change her complexion to any color he wanted.

Captivated by the idea, Krishna proceeded to do so and thus, introduced the play of colors on Holi.

*( Explanation. Even today, Holi is one of the most important festival of Braj, where the men of Nandgaon and women of Barsana play ‘latthmar Holi’ in the remembrance of the playful throw of colors by Krishna on ‘Gopis’ and their resistance. )*

*2 ) Sacrifice of Kamadeva*

According to Hindu mythology, the world is looked after the Trinity of Gods - Lord Brahma, the creator; Lord Vishnu, the nurturer; and Lord Shiva, the destroyer.

According to a legend, Goddess Sati, the daughter of Daksha Prajapati, one of the first sons of Lord Brahma, married Lord Shiva against the wishes of her father.

Thus, Daksha did not invite her and her husband to a grand yagya arranged by him.

When Sati came to know about the event in her father’s house, she thought it to be a slip of mind and proceeded to participate in the event despite the warnings of her husband.

But once she reached there, she realized her fault and was infuriated by the insult of her husband.

As a penance for her disobedience, she entered the fire. When Lord Shiva came to know of her sudden demise, he was furious. Even after he controlled his anger, he started a severe meditation and renounced all work.

The world’s balance soon crumbled in his absence and Sati took rebirth as Goddess Parvati to try and win Lord Shiva’s heart and wake him up from his trance. She tried all ways to get the attention of Shiva.

When she had exhausted all her feminine ways, she invoked the help of Kamadava, the Indian cupid-god, who agreed to help her in the cause of the world despite the risks involved. He shot his love-arrow on Shiva’s heart.

Disturbed in his trance, Lord Shiva opened his third eye that fired anger and instantly incinerated Kamadeva. It is said that it was on the day of Holi that Kamadeva had sacrificed himself for the good of all beings.

Later, when Lord Shiva realized his mistake, he granted Kamadeva immortality in invisible form.

*( Moral of the story: This incident of burning off kama is called kamadahana or Holi. As the lust was won over by Lord Shiva the kamadahana or Holi festival is celebrated as an event associating with the Bliss of God. So following kamadahana during holi, people put the powders on themselves and others remembering this victory over lust. )*

*3 ) Bhakt Prahlad & Holika*

There was a mighty demon king named Hirnakashyipu who had won all the three worlds of heaven, earth and hell and had thus, become very proud. He assumed that he could defeat even Lord Vishnu with his valor. He went to the extent that he had enforced a law that everybody would worship him instead of gods and deities.

However, his little son Prahlad refused to accept his commands and continued to worship Lord Vishnu with complete devotion. Infuriated by this defiance of his son, he ordered his soldiers to throw him down a hill. Praying fervently and having full faith in Lord Vishnu, Prahlad did not retract from his word. True to his faith, Lord Vishnu rescued him at the last moment.

Flustered by this news, Hirnakashyipu invoked the help of his sister Holika, who had a boon that she could walk through the fire unharmed to do away with his son.

The wicked aunt agreed to the evil desires of his brother and entered the fire with her nephew Prahlad.

However, the brother and sister had forgot that Holika could only enter the fire alone or she would perish. Thus, blessed by Lord Vishnu, the child Prahlad remained unharmed but Holika got burnt and died instantly.

Holi is thus celebrated to commemorate the death of the evil aunt, after whom the festival is named, and the new life granted to Prahlad for his devotion and faith. To this day, cow dung is hurled into the fire and obscenities are shouted at the Holi fire at some places to insult Holika.

*( Moral of the Holika story: Those who love God shall be saved, and they that torture the devotee of God shall be reduced to ashes. When Holika was burnt, people abused her and sang the glories of the Lord and of His great devotee, Prahlad. In imitation of that, people even today use abusive language, but unfortunately forget to sing the praises of the Lord and His devotee! )*

*Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare*

Final Words of a Dying Father

From Back to Godhead

By Janakinatha Dasa

Every December, the book marathon promises to be an exciting event. While travelling from door to door, village to village, through remote parts of India, we invariably meet someone who has been miraculously touched by Krishna’s mercy. One such person was Chandu, whom we met in Srirampur, Maharashtra. His tall posture and heavy built contrasted with his soft, humble demeanor. Curious to know his background, I requested him to narrate his story of choosing the path of Krishna consciousness. Below is the story as I heard it from him:

Early Life

Right from childhood, I had a quarrelsome behavior. My strong and stout body enabled me to bully others and fight with them. I would harass everyone and behave rashly. This made others hate and fear me, so many people kept their distance. As opposed to me was my father, who was a very soft and gentle person, a humble schoolteacher, devoted to tulasi and Lord Vitthala. Local people wondered how such a person would give birth to a tyrant like me.

At a very young age, I was nominated as the president of a political party. Lying, cheating, and manipulative dealings were my daily activities, and drinking alcohol and meat-eating became a part of my lifestyle. My father would spend his day in devotional activities, while I was engrossed in fights and sense indulgence. Many people advised my father to somehow transform my character, but all his efforts failed. Finally he got me married to a girl, hoping that after marriage I might change.

My wife had a tough time handling me. Frustrated with my brute behavior, she would often leave home to visit her parents. Meanwhile my corrupt dealings had risen to a higher level since I was promoted to a higher rank within the party. My father would often plead with me, “Dear son, please read Dnyaneshwari (a commentary on the Bhagavad-gita by Dnyaneshwar, a famous saint from Maharashtra) at least once in your life.” I couldn’t care less about this instruction. I was speeding towards the darkest region of hellish existence. I had opened a liquor shop and a non-vegetarian restaurant. Almost every night, I would spend time eating meat and drinking alcohol, and then I would return home and beat up my wife or create trouble in my neighborhood. My family life began to break into pieces. “A demigod father, a demonic son” this is how people addressed us.

Promise at the Deathbed

My father soon became terminally ill and was lying on his deathbed. Fully drunk and intoxicated, I went near him. He said these last words before leaving his body: “At least once you should read Dnyaneshwari.” I said I will, and then he left this world. Now that the last hindrance to my sinful enjoyment was gone, I fully dived into all kinds of indulgence unrestrictedly. Days passed, many months passed, and all the while, my father’s request kept surfacing in my mind repeatedly, and I would feel guilty of not keeping up my promise.

Finally one day I reluctantly decided to read this book. I entered the puja room, where I saw many sacred books bundled in a white cloth. I pulled out Dnyaneshwari and began to read it. Unfortunately, I found the language too archaic and the message too cryptic. I was about to keep the book back in its place and give up reading when I noticed Srila Prabhupada’s Bhagavad-gita As It Is along with some other small books in the same bundle. I thought, “Well, Dnyaneshwari is the same as Bhagavad-gita, so let me try reading the Gita instead.” I felt a special attraction towards the picture of Krishna and Arjuna, where Krishna is driving the chariot of His dear devotee.

I would read the Gita inside the bar and would simultaneously preach. Sitting on a chair and my legs sprawling over the table, I would hold a bottle of beer in one hand and the Gita in the other. My audience consisted of fully intoxicated drunks, who could barely lift themselves after their binge. . The discussion would sometimes go on till midnight. This “satsanga” program continued for about seven months.

On the Way to Krishna

The Bhagavad-gita instructs us to offer food to God before we eat it. Yajna-Sistasinah santo mucyante sarva-kilbisaih/ bhunjate te tv agham papa ye pacanty atma-karanat: “The devotees of the Lord are released from all kinds of sins because they eat food which is offered first for sacrifice. Others, who prepare food for personal sense enjoyment, verily eat only sin.” (Gita 3.13) I began to follow this instruction. Reaching home late night, fully drunk, I would wake my wife and ask her to prepare food. I am sure my method of offering food was not scripturally approved. When the food was ready, I would take the plate and keep it in front of the murti of Lord Krishna. And in half-asleep intoxicated state, I would order Krishna, “Eat!” The Bhagavad-gita had convinced me that God can accept food and eat it. But sometimes I would laugh at my crazy behavior, and I would feel that the murti is laughing back at me. Gradually I developed a desire to render some service to God.

Caitanya Carana during the installation of Deities in his house

The Bhagavad-gita and Srila Prabhupada’s explanation continued to impress me more and more. I read how Krishna is pleased with anyone who tries to distribute His message to the masses. With this motive, I printed flyers containing the maha-mantra and short message of the Gita. While distributing these flyers in my village, the local villagers requested me to give a short speech. Although I spoke for a few minutes from the Gita, I understood that I need to follow the principles more seriously and lead a purer life.

Once when I visited Pandharpur, I saw a group of padayatra devotees travelling village to village doing harinama-sankirtana. Inside the bullock cart I saw a huge picture of Srila Prabhupada. I had seen many saints and godmen in many places, but I always doubted their authenticity and purity. When I saw Srila Prabhupada, however, I was convinced that this person is genuine, and I developed more faith in him.

Some days later, my friend Sudama visited my house. He said, “Do you know that in Pandharpur there is a temple of Lord Krishna, the speaker of the Bhagavad-gita? His Holiness Lokanatha Swami Maharaja is going to give a series of lectures. Why don’t you attend?” I was not sure what to say, but it seems some divine force pushed me to say yes. I thought, “Let me try it once. I don’t have to commit to their process. I can always come back if I don’t like them.” As soon as I entered the ISKCON temple in Pandharpur and met the devotees, I could feel I was undergoing a mystical transformation. I felt a sense of peace and happiness. Sitting through the entire discourse, I was convinced that this is the path I need to follow throughout my life. The seed of love and devotion were now firmly planted in the soil of my heart.

Upon returning to my village, I decided to begin a new life. I wound up my liquor and meat enterprise. I even gave up my political post and instead took up farming and agriculture as my profession. I started chanting the holy names of Krishna, the Hare Krishna maha-mantra, and began to follow the four regulative principles. It was amazing to see how I could easily give up my nasty habits. My family members were initially skeptical, unable to understand the change in me. Earlier all my actions were under the influence of alcohol, but seeing this miraculous transformation in my life, they were wondering if I was acting under the influence of something more dangerous. Every morning I started reading the Bhagavad-gita, and I introduced everyone in my home to the devotional way of life. After a few years, Lokanatha Swami Maharaja offered me spiritual initiation, giving me the name Caitanya Carana Dasa.

From Chandu to Caitanya Carana the story is amazing and hope-giving. It proves the power of bhakti, or Krishna consciousness: how it can raise anyone from the lowest level of ignorance to the highest level of enlightenment. And it also shows how potent Srila Prabhupada’s books are, and how if anyone comes in contact with them in any manner, he or she will get the ultimate benefit.

Janakinatha Dasa is a resident monk at the ISKCON temple in Nashik. He teaches Krishna consciousness to college students.

*Stop this Slaughtering Process of Material Nature*

So then first of all people do not understand what is the aim of life. They do not care at the present moment. They have no distinction what is sinful life or what is pious life. But we may not believe in these things, but things are there like that. Just like if you infect some disease, it will come out. You believe or not believe, it doesn't matter. Here is our doctor saheb. He knows that if you have infected some disease, it will come out. So we are infecting so many infectious qualities. There are three qualities - sattva-guṇa, rajo-guṇa, tamo-guṇa - and according to our infection, we have to accept a different type of body. Karmaṇā daiva-netreṇa (SB 3.31.1). Every one of us, we are working under the modes of material nature, and according to our association we will have to accept a certain type of body, tathā dehāntara-prāptiḥ (BG 2.13). Unfortunately, there is no science, there is no college, there is no university to learn this science of nature, how things are going on. Prakṛteḥ kriyamāṇāni guṇaiḥ karmāṇi sarvaśaḥ (BG 3.27). Prakṛti is being there. So we are in this material world on account of this infectious condition. This is our problem. And we have to die. That's a fact. If you say that "I don't believe in death," that is not excuse. Death must be there. You must die. So in this way our life is going on. So in the human form of life we can rectify this. This is the process of Kṛṣṇa consciousness, that if we rectify our constant association with different material modes of nature... And as the result of this association, we are accepting one body and again dying, and again accepting another body, again dying. This business will be stopped. Yad gatvā na nivartante tad dhāma paramaṁ mama (BG 15.6). Somehow or other, if you become fit to go back to home, back to Godhead, yad gatvā, then you haven't got to come back again. But they do not understand that this material conditional life is always miserable. They have accepted, "It is very nice." Animals. Animals, just like in the slaughterhouse, livestock godown, there are so many animals, and they are going to be slaughtered. Everyone knows. They also know, the animals. But on account of their animal quality, they cannot do anything. Similarly, we are also put into the slaughterhouse of this material world. It is called mṛtyu-loka. Everyone knows that he will be slaughtered. Today or tomorrow or fifty years after or a hundred years after, everyone knows that he will be slaughtered. He will die. Death means slaughter. Nobody wants to die. The animals also, do not like to die. But they are forcibly killed. This is called slaughter. Similarly, who wants to die? Nobody wants to die. But by nature's law he has to be killed. That is slaughterhouse. The whole material world is slaughterhouse. We have to realize that. And it is called mṛtyu-loka. This is the problem. But they do not take it very seriously, like animal. The animal, he does not take very seriously. And even if he knows he will die, he cannot take any step. So our position is like that. Mṛtyu-saṁsāra-sāgarāt, Teṣām ahaṁ anukampārtham aham ajñāna-jaṁ tamaḥ. Teṣām ahaṁ samuddhartā mṛtyu-saṁsāra-sāgarāt (BG 12.7). So we should understand our position. Nobody wants to die, but he is slaughtered. Again he is given another chance, another body. Again he is slaughtered. This is the laws of nature, going on. Daivī hy eṣā guṇamayī mama māyā duratyayā (BG 7.14). We should seriously understand this, that how to stop this slaughtering process of material nature. That is intelligence. Otherwise, to become happy like cats and dogs, "Oh, I am very nicely eating and jumping. I don't care for being slaughtered," that is not very good intelligence. Intelligence is how to stop this slaughtering process of nature. That is intelligence. That is being discussed. So anyone can get out of the slaughtering process by devotional service. That is stated here, kecit kevalayā bhaktyā (SB 6.1.15). Kecit. That is not very common. Very rarely one comes to Kṛṣṇa consciousness. Kecit kevalayā bhaktyā. Simply by devotional service, one can get out of this dangerous condition of being slaughtered. Kecit kevalayā bhaktyā (SB 6.1.15). And who are they? Vāsudeva-parāyaṇāḥ, devotees of Kṛṣṇa. Kṛṣṇa's name is Vāsudeva. He is the son of Vasudeva; therefore His name is Vāsudeva. So vāsudeva-parāyaṇāḥ. Parāyaṇāḥ means "Our ultimate goal is Vāsudeva, nothing more." They are called vāsudeva-parāyaṇāḥ. Vāsudeva-parāyaṇāḥ, aghaṁ dhunvanti. Agham means the material contamination. We are always associating with material contamination. So if we become vāsudeva-parāyaṇāḥ... Vāsudevaḥ sarvam iti sa mahātmā sudurlabhaḥ (BG 7.19), the same thing. Here it says kecit - means very rarely. And Kṛṣṇa also says in the Bhagavad-gītā, vāsudevaḥ sarvam iti sa mahātmā sudurlabhaḥ (BG 7.19). Sudurlabhaḥ, very rare.

Guidelines for Cow Protection from the Mahabharata

1. One should never kick cows, for one who does so will have to suffer in hell for a hundred lives. Cows are the abode of all auspiciousness. For this reason, they always deserve worship.
2. Bullocks should never be struck harshly with a goad or whip.

3. One should not proceed through the midst of cows.

4. When cows are grazing or lying down, one should not disturb them in any way.

5. When cows are thirsty and are refused water [ because a person is obstructing their access to a water tank or river ] merely by glancing at such a person a cow will create great difficulties for him along with all his relatives and friends. What creatures can be more sacred than cows, whose very dung is purifying?

6. That man who, before eating himself, gives everyday for a year a handful of grass to a cow belonging to another person, is regarded as undergoing a vow or observance which bestows the fruition of his every wish. Such a person acquires children, fame, wealth and prosperity and dispels all evils.

7. The cow should never be given away for slaughter.

8. A bull or bullock can be used for ploughing, but a cow should never be used to till the soil.

9. A cow should not be given to an atheist.

10. One should not, even in thought, injure a cow. One should always show compassion towards cows.

11. One should never show disregard for cows in any way.

12. One should never cast one's urine, excrement and other secretions on cow dung.

13. One should never obstruct cows in any way.

14. One should not disrespect cow dung. The circular marks in the cow dung represent Lord Vishnu's chakra.

15. He who, without being checked by the restraints of the scriptures, sells a cow for slaughter, kills a cow, or eats the flesh of a cow, or for the sake of money causes a person to kill cows, rots in hell for as many years as there are hairs on the body of the slain cow.

HH Radhanath maharaj has given us a beautiful prayer to offer To Lord caitanya on Gaur purnima.

And this is what we pray for, on Gaur Purnima.

Krishna let my heart and my life be yours, I am yours as the servant of the servant of your servants.
Grant me that pure love that pleases You.

Grant me that service attitude that pleases You.

Grant me that eagerness to hear Bhagvad Gita and Srimad Bhagvatam to please You.

Grant me that enthusiasm to serve every devotee in such a way that You will be pleased.

Grant me that compassion so that I can be an instrument of Your mercy for the people of this world to please You.

And grant me that taste for chanting the holy names to please You.

Let us offer this prayer on this most holy day of Gaur Purnima.  On this day Lord Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu is specially merciful to hear our prayers and to fulfill our prayers if they are offered with sincerity.
