My Chest Swells Up With Pride

An amazing story by Indradyumna Swami about one of his disciples from
Russia, a very advanced mataji, who has dedicated her life and soul to book
distribution
*"My Chest Swells Up With Pride"*
On the way out, one of my disciples, *Ragalekha dasi*, approached me. She
is a woman in her late 40s, and I remembered her as a *faithful disciple*
who always made it a point to come to my programs when I visited Russia. So
when *she asked me to visit her apartment to see her Govardhan Sila, I
agreed.*
The next day, I went there with Jananivasa. I had several other
appointments that afternoon, so I was in a hurry. “We’ll have to make this
quick,” I told Jananivasa. But I was soon to be reminded that a spiritual
master must never be so busy that he cannot take the time to reciprocate
with and acknowledge a disciple’s loving service.
*Ragalekha’s apartment was just one room* in an old building in the center
of the city. As I walked in, I was struck by the *spiritual atmosphere*.
There were few possessions – a chair, an old wooden bookshelf, an altar for
her Deity – but the mood was rich with devotion. Her Govardhan-Sila, named
Lala, was sitting on a little cushion, beautifully decorated with flowers
and simple ornaments. A variety of sweets were on a plate before Him.
Ragalekha, dressed in an old sari, sat shyly in the corner.  _The whole
situation reminded me of a small, bhajan kutir in Vrindavan._
“Do you live here alone?” I asked her. “I’m a guest here,” she said looking
downwards. “This is Lala’s home.”
“Oh I see,” I said. “That’s a nice realization,” I thought. Then I looked
anxiously at my watch. My next appointment was in 30 minutes.
*“Well what do you do each day?”* I asked.”
"I distribute Srila Prabhupada’s books,” she said.
“Do you do anything else?” I asked.
“No,” she said. *“That’s the instruction you gave me 13 years ago.”*
I stopped looking at my watch. I could hardly believe my ears.
*“You’ve been distributing books for 13 years?”* I asked. Jananivasa spoke
up.
“Srila Gurudeva,” he said, “all the devotees in Yekaterinburg know that
*Ragalekha’s been going out eight hours a day, six days a week, for
thirteen years, distributing books, except when she’s sick.*”
Ragalekha was looking at Lala. “Why didn’t you tell me?” I asked her.
*“She’s too shy and humble,*” said Jananivasa.
I felt tears coming into my eyes. I sat there looking at her. “Thirteen
years,” I thought, “every day on the streets of Yekaterinburg, distributing
my spiritual master’s books. What austerities this woman must have endured!”
I suddenly thought of the previous day and how I had complained to
Jananivasa about the inconvenience on the flight. I felt ashamed of myself.
“She’s well known among the people in this city,” Jananivasa continued. You
can just imagine, so many years on the street, in the heat, the rain, the
wind, and the snow. *She’s out there when it’s 20 below zero*.” My tears
started running down my face.
“And *she doesn’t keep a ruble (Russian money) for herself*,” he continued.
“I’ve heard *she keeps all the profit for you.”*
Ragalekha reached under the altar, took out an old worn-out envelope, and
shyly handed it to me. I opened it and saw US dollars inside. I handed it
to Jananivasa.
Jananivasa took the money out of the envelope. His eyes started turning red
and moist. “There’s *1,500 dollars* here,” he said in a quivering voice.
“It’s the *equivalent of two years of wages for a working man* in this
country.”
I looked around at the chair and the simple bookshelf and into the small
kitchen. Inside there was an old stove – and one pot. *“She only has that
one sari she’s wearing*,” Jananivasa said. “I’ve never seen her dressed in
anything else.”
I handed the laksmi back to Ragalekha. “Here,” I said. “You use this money
for buying a ticket to India this fall. I will be taking devotees on
parikrama in Vrindavan for the month of Kartika. I want you to join us.”
Her body tensed up. “No, Srila Gurudeva!” she said and pushed the envelope
back. “Please! The people who gave that money will get much more benefit if
it’s used in your service than mine. Think of their welfare.” I was
speechless.
“Who is this woman?” I thought. “Living so simply, *serving the sankirtan
mission of Lord Caitanya faithfully for so many years, desiring no fame or
recognition, and showing such concern for the conditioned souls!*” I
thought of something Tamal Krishna Goswami had once written.
“Although some of us begin as gurus for our disciples, it seems that these
disciples are sometimes more fortunate than we are . Actually many of them
are elevated personalities.”
[from Vraja Lila]
“Srila Gurudeva,” said Jananivasa, “this morning she admitted to me that
she took a break from her book distribution for the first time since you
gave her that instruction 13 years ago. For two weeks she repaired her
apartment, hoping you would visit.
“She had also taken the advice of the security guards at the open market
where she often distributes. For years, those big burly men used to throw
her out of the market whenever they caught her distributing books. Finally
they relented. They began to appreciate her determination and purity. Two
weeks ago one of them said, ‘Please take a break. You’re here every single
day. We’re afraid you’ll get worn down and influenced by the bad character
of those around you. Please!
“She took it that the Lord was speaking through them, and she took the
time off. Gurudeva, we, your disciples, will arrange for her ticket to
India. Don’t worry. Already devotess here in Yekaterinburg have arranged
things so she doesn’t have to pay for the books she takes. They even pay
the BBT for the books she distributes. When necessary they also help pay
her rent, electricity, and water. She lives in another world. She just
distributes books day in and day out and spends a little on the worship of
her Govardhan Sila. She puts the rest of the money under the altar for you.
By now, the tears were pouring from my eyes. Ragalekha came forward, with
folded hands and tears in her own eyes.”Srila Gurudeva,” *she said, “please
bless me that I may distribute Srila Prabhupada’s books until the day I die
and that I will always be a faithful follower of you and my Lala.”*
She started to pay full dandavats on the floor. Since women don’t generally
pay full dandavats, Jananivasa reached forward to stop her. I caught his
hand. “There’s no harm,” I said. “This woman is transcendental.”
As Jananivasa and I walked out of the apartment, Ragalekha was packing her
book bag. I turned to Jananivasa. “It was worth it,” I said. “Meeting her
was worth all the austerities, inconveniences, and dangers I’ll ever
encounter in your country.”
I thought about the words of Srila Prabhupada. “These news are giving me
new life . In my horoscope just done, they have described although this is
a critical period, if I pass through, I will live 100 years. Then I shall
surely come to visit your farm . The project is very nice. *When I hear
this report my chest swells up, being so proud of my disciples’
achievements*.”

Prabhupada’s secretary, Tamal Krsna Goswami, in a letter to Ramesvara dasa,

Dham visit

Srila Prabhupada said:

"Coming to pilgrimage means to come where the sadhus are. I am here, so why is everyone going elsewhere?" "You cannot see Vrndavana with visaya, or material spirit. The test is how much you have conquered over eating, sleeping and mating. Don't think you can just come to Vrndavana and become a Goswami!"

Lilamrta V: 193

1. We come to a holy place to become purified, to develop our Krsna consciousness.

2. It is important not only to maintain a submissive, humble attitude with other ISKCON devotees but with all the residents of the Dhama. (We should be especially mindful of this in "mundane" dealings e.g. arranging transport, shopping).

3. To actually be in the Dhama means to be in the association of devotees, to hear from senior Vaisnavas and serve them. We cannot see a holy place with visaya (material spirit). We are reliant on the mercy of the Vaisnavas.

4. We must maintain Srila Prabhupada's good name by being clean in all our dealings. (This includes everything from eating to changing money).

5. We must be aware that Govardhana Hill, Radha and Syama Kunda etc. are supremely transcendental personalities. If we desire to take Their darsana we must do so in proper consciousness.

6. Animals are also residents of the Dhama. We should neither befriend them nor make them our enemies. It is best to maintain a neutral position.

7. It is important to come to the Dhama in a service mood rather than an enjoying mood. Then our visit will be successful.

Damodar Invitation

Hare Krishna dear devotees,

Please accept my humble obeisances.
All glories to Srila Gurudev !!!
All glories to Srila Prabhupada !!!

Between *October 25, 2018 and November 23, 2018* we are having Kartik/Damodar month. This is the month in which Krishna was bound to a mortar using a rope by his mother Yashoda. There are many pastimes during this month. During the Damodar month, if one performs even a small devotional service, the effects are multiplied many times. Following is a list of some of the glories of Damodar month. The glories have been taken from various Vedic scriptures.

1) Just as there is no yuga equal to Satya-yuga, no scripture equal to the Vedas, and no place of pilgrimage equal to the Ganges, so there is no month equal to Kartika. Even unserious persons who execute devotional service according to the regulative principles during the month of Karttika, and within the jurisdiction of Mathura (or Vrindavana) in India, are very easily awarded the Lord's personal service". During the Kartika month millions of devotees worship Damodara Krishna with ghee lamps and devotional bhajans, glorifying His playful childhood pastime of stealing yogurt.

2) "When one offers a lamp during the month of Karttika, his sins in many thousands and millions of births perish in half an eye blink."

3) "Please hear the glories of offering a lamp during pleasing to Lord Kesava. O King of brahmanas, a person who offers a lamp in this way will not take birth again in this world."

4) "By offering a lamp during the month of Karttika one attains a pious result ten million times greater than the result obtained by bathing at Kuruksetra during a solar eclipse or by bathing in the river Narmada during a lunar eclipse."

5) "O Tiger among sages! For a person who thus offers a lamp burning with ghee or sesame oil, what is the use of performing an asvasmedha-yajna?"

6) "Even if there are no mantras, no pious deeds, and no purity, everything becomes perfect when a person offers a lamp during the month of Karttika."

This is just tip of the iceberg.

*What do we do?*

We bring Damodar deity to your place and offer ghee lamps. All we need is a small table to setup an altar. You can invite your friends and relatives for the program so that they can also benefit. We perform a kirtan while everyone performs arati and we have a small class for about 15 minutes. Then we take some prasadam and answer any questions the devotees might have. The whole program does not take more than 30 minutes. This is a great way to spread mercy to your friends and relatives.

*What do you need to do?*

You do not have to do anything except to invite your friends and relatives and spread the mercy. We can schedule the time to perform the program at your convenience any time of the day during this month. We will bring everything with us and we do this for *FREE*.

We request you spread this word. It is only few weeks away and we would appreciate if you could share this information with your friends and relatives so that we can perform this at their place as well.

*PLEASE LET US KNOW IMMEDIATELY SO THAT WE CAN START SCHEDULING THE PUJA AT YOUR PLACE.*

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you need any further information.

your humble servant,

10 Topics of SrimadBhagavatham

the ten subject matters dealt with in the text of the Bhāgavatam. Of these, the tenth is the substance, and the other nine are categories derived from the substance. These ten subjects are listed as follows:
(1) Sarga: the first creation by Viṣṇu, the bringing forth of the five gross material elements, the five objects of sense perception, the ten senses, the mind, the intelligence, the false ego and the total material energy, or universal form.
(2) Visarga: the secondary creation, or the work of Brahmā in producing the moving and unmoving bodies in the universe (brahmāṇḍa).
(3) Sthāna: the maintenance of the universe by the Personality of Godhead, Viṣṇu. Viṣṇu’s function is more important and His glory greater than Brahmā’s and Lord Śiva’s, for although Brahmā is the creator and Lord Śiva the destroyer, Viṣṇu is the maintainer.
(4) Poṣaṇa: special care and protection for devotees by the Lord. As a king maintains his kingdom and subjects but nevertheless gives special attention to the members of his family, so the Personality of Godhead gives special care to His devotees who are souls completely surrendered to Him.
(5) Ūti: the urge for creation, or initiative power, that is the cause of all inventions, according to the necessities of time, space and objects.
(6) Manv-antara: the periods controlled by the Manus, who teach regulative principles for living beings who desire to achieve perfection in human life. The rules of Manu, as described in the Manu-saṁhitā, guide the way to such perfection.
(7) Īśānukathā: scriptural information regarding the Personality of Godhead, His incarnations on earth and the activities of His devotees. Scriptures dealing with these subjects are essential for progressive human life.
(8) Nirodha: the winding up of all energies employed in creation. Such potencies are emanations from the Personality of Godhead who eternally lies in the Kāraṇa Ocean. The cosmic creations, manifested with His breath, are again dissolved in due course.
(9) Mukti: liberation of the conditioned souls encaged by the gross and subtle coverings of body and mind. When freed from all material affection, the soul, giving up the gross and subtle material bodies, can attain the spiritual sky in his original spiritual body and engage in transcendental loving service to the Lord in Vaikuṇṭhaloka or Kṛṣṇaloka. When the soul is situated in his original constitutional position of existence, he is said to be liberated. It is possible to engage in transcendental loving service to the Lord and become jīvan-mukta, a liberated soul, even while in the material body.
(10) Āśraya: the Transcendence, the summum bonum, from whom everything emanates, upon whom everything rests, and in whom everything merges after annihilation. He is the source and support of all. The āśraya is also called the Supreme Brahman, as in the Vedānta-sūtra (athāto brahma jijñāsā, janmādy asya yataḥ

Pizza

Wife: Don’t put so many clothes for wash today.

Husband: Why ?

She said : Maid has said she won’t come for two days.

Husband :Why ?

Wife : She said she is going to meet her grand daughter during Ganpati festival.

Husband : OK, Will not put too many clothes.

Wife: And, Shall I give her Rs. 500 for Ganpati? Festival bonus?

Husband: Why? Diwali is approaching, we will give her at that time.

Wife: Oh no dear. She is poor. Going to meet her daughter and grand daughter, so she will also feel nice. Moreover, everything has become so expensive these days. How will she able to celebrate festival?

Husband : You ! I don’t know why you become emotional so easily.

Wife : Oh dear, don’t worry. I am going to cancel today’s program of ordering Pizza. Why unnecessarily blow away Rs. 500 on eight pieces of stale bread.

Husband : Wow. Great. Snatching Pizza from us and giving to the maid !

Maid returned after three days and got busy in mopping and dusting.

Husband asked her.. So, how was the vacation ?
Maid : Very nice sahib.. Didi had given Rs. 500 .. festival bonus.

Husband : So you went and met your daughter ? and also met your grand daughter ?

Maid: yes sahib. Enjoyed a lot and spent Rs 500 in two days time.

Husband : Really ? Ok so what did you do with Rs. 500?

Maid : Rs. 150 for dress for grand daughter, Rs 40 for a doll, bought sweets worth Rs 50 for daughter, Rs 50 as offering to Deity in temple, Rs 60 towards bus fare, Rs 25 for bangles for daughter, bought a nice belt worth Rs 50 for son-in-law, balance Rs 75 gave to daughter to buy copy and pencil for grand daughter. Maid gave a full account of the expenses incurred.

Husband : So much in Rs 500?

With surprise, he started thinking. The eight pieces of Pizza appeared in front of his eyes and each one of them acted as a hammer started pricking his consciousness. For the price of one Pizza, he started comparing the expenses his maid had incurred during her visit to her daughter.

The eight pieces of Pizza floated in front of his eyes.

First piece ... dress for the child
Second piece … towards sweets..
Third piece … towards offering to the deity in the temple.
Fourth piece ... towards bus fare.
Fifth piece ... towards doll.
Sixth piece ... towards bangles,
Seventh piece... towards belt for the son-in-law.
Eighth piece... towards copy and pencil.

So far he had observed pizza only from one angle. He turned it upside down and observe how it looks like from the other side but today his maid showed him the other side of the pizza. The eight pieces of pizza showed him the real meaning of life and the meaning of “Spending for life” or “Life for spending”.

Think about it.✌✌
