20 GUIDELINES FOR GRHASTHAS

Recommendations by HH Bhakti Rasamrita Swami for a Krishna conscious grhastha ashram, to assist all grhastha & to-be grhastha devotees.
20 GUIDELINES FOR GRHASTHAS
----------------------------------------------
1.Remember that your house,money,family,etc are all Krishna's property &
that all these have to be engaged in His service. He has very kindly given
you all these out of His mercy,& He may take them away as He pleases. So be
grateful for what you have & engage all these gifts in His service with
devotion & detachment.
2.Keep the Holy name,Krishna katha & the Temple/home deities in the centre
of your life.Attend devotional programmes in the Temple & at other devotee
gatherings on a regular basis.Especially,hearing discourses/classes live &
participating in sankirtana is important.
3.Keep your sadhana strong. Please remember that the best chanting you can do
is early in the morning. So avoid unnecessary late nights. It is best to
retire early at night,so you can rise early in the morning & be fresh for
your sadhana. Your japa is the most important activity of the day. Try to
chant clearly & hear attentively.Be in a prayerful mood.
4.Read Srila Prabhupada's books regularly & seriously.This will strengthen
faith, conviction & understanding,& help in keeping proper spiritual focus in
your day to day life.Remember : guru, sadhu & shastra will show us our proper
direction in life.
5.All the members of the family, young & old, should gather together at home
at least once every day,to have arati, kirtana & some discussion/reading from
the scriptures.Srila Prabhupada mentions this in his purports.
6..Engage yourself in some seva regularly. It is good to take some
responsibility,small or big,according to one's situation.Serve with
humility,enthusiasm,sincerity & eagerness,without seeking any gross or
subtle reward from the service.Do not seek,or be attached to,position or
prestige that may be associated with any service.
7.Associate with devotees as much as possible.Live together in the society
of devotees with a feeling of friendship towards other devotees,& in a mood
of service to them.Ensure that this friendship is not spoilt by
ego,envy,self-interest,insensitivity or negligence.Keep Krishna in the
centre of these relationships.
8.Avoid the association of non- devotees as much as possible.Where such
association is not avoidable (at work, for example),perform your duty well &
be socially pleasant. But be careful to not let their non-devotional
consciousness rub off on you.Do not join them & take pleasure in the things
that they take pleasure in viz mundane gossip,movies,sports... & violation
of the four regulative principles.Set a good example as a devotee,& speak &
act in a way that will make them feel positive about Krishna consciousness.
9.Similarly,whilst staying strong in  your devotional principles
personally,deal with family,in-laws,neighbours,friends,etc in a way that
will increase their appreciation for Krishna consciousness.
10.Avoid distracting mundane entertainment offered through
cinema,TV,internet & other means.Be careful that you are not overwhelmed by
electronic gadgetry,communication devices & social media.Use them
judiciously as tools,if you must;do not become helpless tools in their
hands.
11.Take decisions (small or big ) in life according to how your
Krishna consciousness will be affected, directly or indirectly.Consider the
short term & long term implications of your decision.Accept whatever is
favourable for your Krishna consciousness & reject that which is
unfavourable. This should be the ultimate criterion in decision making.
12.Purity (or impurity) of the source of your livelihood will also affect
your life & consciousness.Hence choose professions that have minimum
possible material contamination & spiritual risk.Avoid professions in which
there is a clear violation of the four regulative principles e.g working for
a company that produces or sells liquor. Do not involve yourself in overly
risky money earning ventures, being lured by the prospect of very quick &
large profits.Avoid illegal business activities of any sort.
13.Spend wisely.Do not unnecessarily spend on things that may not be really
required.Live reasonably simply.Follow the principle of "Simple Living,High
Thinking".Do not be tempted or attracted by,or become envious of,the wealth
or position of others.Do not become a victim of the modern day consumerist
culture with its emphasis on excessive consumption & flashy lifestyles.
14.Save money wisely for the future.Yet,take care to avoid a hoarding
mentality.
15.Give something in charity in Krishna consciousness according to your
means.Charity is recommended in the shastras as one of the dharmas of a
grhastha.
16.Know that your life is meant as a service to others in Krishna
consciousness & not only for yourself or your family.Keep this spirit of
sacrifice in your heart & keep away any feelings of selfishness.
17.Preach the message of Krishna consciousness whenever you get the
opportunity.Follow the advice that Chaitanya Mahaprabhu gave the Kurma
brahmana : "Jaare dekho taare kaho Krishna upadesha...." - speak the message
of Lord Krishna to whoever you meet.In this way cultivate the missionary
spirit.Preaching is not the exclusive preserve of brahmacharis &
sannyasis.Grhasthas must also actively participate in it,according to their
situation.
18.Do not be unduly absorbed in household & material matters.Yet,do not be
neglectful of your household & bonafide material duties. These must be
performed with care,sensitivity & responsibility.
19.Bring up your children in Krishna consciousness, never considering
it to be a burden. This is one of the most important services for a
grhastha. Adjust other services according to the requirements of this
service. For example, during pregnancy or when the child is very young, you may
not be able to do many other services. But do not mind
that. This service is also very pleasing to Krishna. When the time &
opportunity are right, however, you may do those other services.Of course, the
basic services of hearing & chanting must not be neglected at any time. And
it is important to come to the Temple for your own spiritual nourishment as
well as for that of the child.
20.Practice,preserve & teach the principles of traditional & devotional
family life -faithfulness & life-long commitment in marriage,a culture of
respect for all (including elders),sharing, caring, serving, cooking at home, &
so on.In this regard, understand well the pitfalls of accepting modern day
social norms & practices like unrestricted mingling of men & women, eating
out in 'karmi' restaurants,'living together' before marriage,& so on.

“Although Kali-yuga is an ocean of faults, there is still one good quality about this age: simply by chanting the names of God, one can become free from material life and can have transidental freedom.’

Why wearing tilak is so important........

The Padma Purana states:
“O Brahmana! For the sake of My pleasure, My devotee will put on tilak with a steady mind every morning and evening, and during My worhsip and fire sacrifice. Tilak brings auspiciousness, protects one from danger and destroys fear. Therefore one should always wear tilak.”

2. The Skanda Purana says that if one performs sacrifice, offers charity, performs austerities, fire sacrifies or reads the Vedas without wearing tilak, all his activities go in vain.

3. The Padma Purana mentions that one should not see the face of someone who does not wear tilak. If this happens, he should purify himself by looking at the sun.

4. He who wears tilak marked with clay, even a candala, is a pure soul and worshipable; there is no doubt about that. Lord Narayana along with Laxmi Devi is seated in the beautiful space inside the tilak. Therefore, the body of those who wear tilak is the sacred temple of the Lord. When a person performs sacrifice, charity, austerity, japa, etc., all his pious activities become imperishable.

5. The Bramanda Purana says that whether one is impure, devoid of proper etiquette or commiting sinful activities in his mind, if he wears tilak he always remains pure.

6. The Supreme Personality of Godhead said:
“It does not matter where a person who wears tilak dies. Even if he is a candala, he goes to My abode riding on a space ship and becomes worshipped there.”

7. The Lord also said:
“When a person wearing tilak eats in somebody’s house, I deliver twenty generations of his host from hell.”

8. One must apply clay from the base of the nose (between the eyebrows) to the top of the forehead. 3/4 of the upper part of the nose should be covered with tilak in a leaf-like shape and the cavity of the tilak should start from the base of the eyebrows. The Padma Purana says that one should not draw tilak with anything other than the finger.

9. The lowest of the brahmanas who marks the tilak without making a space in the middle drives Visnu and Laxmi away from there.

10. The Padma Purana quotes Maharsi Gautama:
“Oh Maharaja Ambarish! In order to become free from the greatest of sinful activities just behold the person who wears tilak with gopi-chandan.”

11. According to Kashi Kunda, Yamaraja said;
“Oh my messengers! Listen carefully. When you see someone with tilak made of gopi-candan on the forehead, reject him like blazing fire.” === Quotes from the Sri Hari-bhakti-vilasa, written by Srila Gopala Bhatta Goswami and Srila Sanatana Goswami

 ( 19 ) If  Mahabharata
                 is false ,
Then how recent exploration activity by
National - Geographic 's team , & the Indian Army in the northern region of India uncover  a Giant skeleton of
       ' Ghatotkach ' (80 foot)
             Son of Bhima.

( 20 ) Why the US troops in Kandahar (Afganistan) recently discovered a
        5000 year old Vimana,
              (an aeroplane)
from ancient  Mahabharata  period?

* Lufthansa:  When an aeroplane service first started in Germany, the aircraft they employed in service were pure white, resembling huge white swans. When these aeroplanes would fly into the sky and grow slowly smaller and disappear, they would look like swans disappearing into the heart of the sky. In Sanskrit, the word that could describe them was lupth-hansa, or the hidden swan and that's the correct meaning.

*A Yajna is a sacred purifying ritual (havan) in Hinduism that involves a fire ceremony. It is a ritual of sacrifice made to the fire god Agni .  objects such asGhee(Clarified butter), grains, honey,or wood are put into the sacred fire.

Prayer - Story

*A truly beautiful story :*
*During World War II, a soldier was separated from his unit on an island. The fighting had been intense, and in the smoke and the crossfire he had lost touch with his comrades.*
*Alone in the jungle, he could hear enemy soldiers coming in his direction. Scrambling for cover, he found his way up a high ridge to several small caves in the rock. Quickly he crawled inside one of the caves.*
*Although safe for the moment, he realised that once the enemy soldiers looking for him swept up the ridge, they would quickly search all the caves and would be killed.*
*As he waited, he prayed, God, please spare my life. Whatever will happen, I love you and trust you.🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻."*
*After praying, he lay quietly listening to the enemy begin to draw close.*
*He thought, "Well, I guess the God isn't going to help me out of this one." Then he saw a spider begin to build a web over the front of his cave.* *"Hah" he thought, "What I need is a brick wall and what the God has sent me is a spider web. God does have a sense of humour. "*
*As the enemy drew closer he watched from the darkness of his hide out and could see them searching one cave after another.*
*As they came to his, he got ready to make his last stand, but then he heard the leader of the soldiers say, "You may as well ignore looking in this cave....if he had entered here this web would be broken!" So they left and he was delivered!*
*To his amazement, however, after glancing in the direction of his cave, they moved on. Suddenly he realised that with the spider web over the entrance, his cave looked as if no one had entered for quite a while.*
*"God , forgive me," he prayed. "I had forgotten that in you a spider's web is stronger than a brick wall."*
*God's ways are not our ways, God's thoughts are not our thoughts.. He will neither leave us nor forsake us..*
*Let's trust in God always!!*
*(Sometimes a prayer doesn't change the situation.*
*But it changes our attitudes towards the situation*
*And gives us hope which changes our entire life.)*
*Stay Blessed!*

What is Gratitude?

Radhanath Swami: Gratitude is a divine virtue that is so important that other divine virtues could not exist without it. Spirituality grows like seeds within our heart. The goodness of our lifestyle protects that seed. Our spiritual practice of chanting God’s names, reading scriptures, doing seva for God and others waters that seed. But gratitude is what makes the ground fertile so that all these other virtues will actually have its maximum effect. A fertile soil allows the seed to have deep roots and grow very strong and for that a grateful heart is essential.
Gratitude is to see beyond the immediate circumstances that comes upon us. But to actually seek the essence of that situation, which is real wisdom, we need to see every situation as a beautiful opportunity to grow if we are to be grateful. All the dualities in life, success or failure, honor and dishonor, are all opportunities to learn something, to become better and grow. Ultimately, in every situation, there is an opportunity to take shelter of the higher power of God and in doing so we find that life has inconceivable treasures in every moment. Therefore, to seek the essence means to look for the hand of God in every situation. This is the spiritual definition of success.
If we simply lament when things go wrong nothing is accomplished. But if, in a difficult situation, we really sincerely take shelter of the Lord and with our God-given ability try to fix and improve that situation, then we can reverse a curse into a blessing. The story of the greatest success in life often involves a person who hits rock bottom only to discover something so beautiful and precious that if they didn’t go through it they would have lived just a mediocre spiritual life and not have accomplished much within.
